About
Stemming from my experiences of giving and receiving items through the concept of Freecycling, this blog is a critique of the industry known as the “gift economy”. I started out as just another freecycler, then moderator. Then something happened that propelled me into being a movement activist. Much of what is written concerns the controversy surrounding The Freecycle Network (TFN). There are many articles referring back to the origins of the company, and indeed events that led up to its creation. This is therefore an activists blog.
If anyone sees anything incorrect please let me know and I will do what I can to correct them. Any errors and omissions are mine. All comments are welcome and indeed if anyone wishes to suggest future topics, or other sites related to the subject of the future of freecycling please tell me now, not tomorrow.
Returning freecycling back to the movement.

Not completely….but I do still love the concept and me group and I dont want to lose it…I have workedVERY hard to get it where it is
I rather resent putting in the hours I do running our group to hear that Deron Beal [who was *not* the first to have this idea - apparently there is an existing recycle group in the north eastern US from 1998 or something. Deron is simply the first to propel the idea on such a grand scale] hauls down a huge pay check and his wife and good friend do as well.
I feel that these funds would be better put to use by giving those groups that need a bit of aid for local website hosting or recycling programs. I feel if Freecycle is supposed to be Volunteer run then Deron and co. should also be volunteers. Why should we make him rich off our exertions? That isn’t what ‘grass roots’ is about to me!
We Canadians don’t even receive recognition on the Freecycle web site with the other international countries – we are lumped with the Americans.
I am very much against Americans running our Mod Squad as well.
Please dont’ get me wrong, I am not anti-US I am simply a Canadian patriot [half my family is US=)] and I very much resent having the US taking over our mod group!
Thanks for the Blog Andy, keep up your efforts here please.

I don’t think anyone is suggesting that you should give up the group you’ve worked so hard to grow. It’s very easy to go independent at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Ready2LeaveFC . There is a checklist there (called details, details, details) along with all the replacement files you’d need (these files can be amended to suit your group if you wish to make changes). There are also graphics available to anyone wishing a graphic for their group’s home page.
