Freecycling Platform No 1: Yahoo Groups

Ok, let me start doing my own synopsis of strengths and weaknesses of various technology platforms that one can now or might in the future envisage using.   Of course there is only one place to start and that is the definitive platform to date – Yahoo Groups

  1. It’s free to the member
  2. It’s free for moderators
  3. It’s scalable
  4. It’s proven
  5. It’s well documented
  6. It’s well understood
  7. Integrates well with Email
  8. Oh, and it is very well used – by 99% of the freecycling marketplace.

  1. Searching for groups via the Yahoo Groups search facility is very hit and miss.   This is one reason that TFN built their own list.
  2. Groups can overlap geographic area (some might argue this is an advantage)
  3. Groups with similar names can be created, causing FUD.
  4. Based on email and therefore frail.  For example sometimes I have seen yahoo group emails incorrectly go into my spam folder.
  5. Any posts have to be structured manually, eg adding the word “offer” and a location to subject field.

I welcome contributions from others to add to the above.

  1. What does “FUD” mean?

    *I could guess, but it’s not printable… 😉
