TFN is not grassroots

According to recent debate The Freecycle Network is definitely not a grassroots organisation. That is the official word from its Executive Director, Deron Beal. Yes, it has the “grassroots” epithet on all its marketing. Yes, group owners keep on saying it is “grassroots”. Yes blog and news articles keep on perpetuating this myth.

Because that is what it is. Let us try to understand in what ways it is and is not grassroots. It is grassroots in the sense that there is substantial involvement by local moderators in running their own group. Yes some of them (a small minority ) have are part of of the Organisational Issues Discussion Group, and yes of late this group has supported a more lively debate (for which this blog takes a lot of self-congratulatory credit!) rather than its previously stilted suppression of anything remotely discussing anything organisational.

But in the end the organisation is run by one man. He alone makes all decisions. He alone is its executive. There is a strong history of anyone who disagrees with him being ousted from the organisation, stage left. Is that grassroots?

The answer to that is categorically NO.  Only when Deron cedes “executive director” status and turns himself into a true trustee with TFN ever hope to actually live the concept of being grassroots, rather than just being a marketing statement.
