Many mods worry their heads over a little thing called “belonging to freecycle”, as if somehow they will either get more members that way, or at even lose members. Nothing could be further from the truth, as this from Stockport Freecycle as they moved through the 11,000 member barrier demonstrates:
“Woo hoo! When we moved to Freegle we had 10,827 and we were at first losing
them quicker than they joined and went down a bit. Steady growth since then,
approx 300 new members in the just over a month since we moved which I’m
more than happy with! 🙂 Long may it continue!”
Instead what happens is that, as group owners and moderators you begin to take full responsibility for you and the community you serve.
I can see that Deron is just a tad upset about losing possibly half of his UK freecycle groups to the Freegle network, so far. But why must he libel a moderator of one of the North East groups on the UK freecycle homepage?
(Much as I did not like the word freegling initially, sadly I think it is now growing on me. This is even more true since someone pointed to the likeness to Google’s name.)
Okay I actually mean the OIDG forum, but a bit of latitude never did any harm. Unlike my attempt at playing with the English language this TFN global forum is in fact in a state of total lockdown. Is it that Mr Beal is scared that what is happening in the Uk might spread to us and Canada?

A couple of weeks ago perhaps. as a result of being officially asked, I rejoined the Freecycle Network’s UkModSquad to help advise as they go through a traumatic phase precipitated not least by the bad treatment of Stockton-on-Tees Freecycle group. Today I was officially deemed persona non-gratis, and in the usual nasty way of applying veiled threats to the groups that I co-owned or moderated.
I simply ask, why they did not treat me as a human being and talk to me first? If they had asked then I would have happily stepped down and kept totally quiet about all the goings on.
I hereby state that all the UkModSquad should hold their heads in deep shame. I hereby state that Uk Moderators who are members of UkModSquad should ask questions, if they dare!
The UkModSquad have unilaterally broken their side of any bargain and deserve no favours. They have treated me and the co-owners of groups I owned or moderated with nothing but disgust.
Judge for yourself with this quotation from an official Freecycle email to a co-owner, “I have written to you first as I would not like to see the group you have built up so well be destroyed.”
Destroyed. What does The Freecycle Network mean by this word?
