Fighting for freerecyling

This is one attempted measurement of democracy...
Image via Wikipedia

The most monumental event in the entire history of freecycling concluded yesterday with a resounding success. I take my hat off to the Uk moderator squad. They achieved something against all odds amid tons of cynicism. They brought the first and only evidence of both democracy and openness to the freecycle network.

Until now the organisation has been a closed society with many of its key rules hidden behind closed doors amidst total secrecy. Yes the marmos could learn a thing or two about how to operate an organisation where some rules are open to viewing by anyone but the key rules are all kept behind under the thumb of one man, one autocrat.

No the new Uk moderators squad union has not done anything yet except form itself, but that is an achievement of which they should feel justly proud. What they have done is an amazing start but that is all it is. What matters is what happens next.

Yes they will formulate their demands. Yes they will negotiate that back and forth. But there are three important questions:

1. Will deron be able to smooth talk to avoid the key questions?
2. Will any answers be acceptable to the moderators who voted for the union committee?
3. And the most important question, what will moderators of groups that did not vote make of this?

The game is afoot.

My nomination to be an office and a gentleman

I hereby nominate and second myself to be an officer on the IAFCMods group.  My credentials are

  • I still moderate a couple of TFN official groups, though I will not release their names to protect the groups and their owners,
  • I have owned and run TFN official groups for around 5 years,
  • I run non-TFN groups (enforced by TFN)
  • I have run forums on Yahoo and elsewhere since the 1980’s (yes that’s before the Internet),
  • I am very critical of the TFN leadership, which in my opinion shows a distinct lack thereof, however
  • I am, like 99.999% of mods very much for freecycling in all its form and
  • I do my research thoroughly, for example everything on this blog has been checked and double checked.

I realise that IAFCmods cannot appoint me since to do so would inflame matters with Mr Beal at this delicate time.

Were 99% of UK moderators against the Climate Change Bill submission?

As I go through my archives I came across one posting on UKmodsquad that expressed as much as anything the common strength of feeling that a political submission should not be made. Because I was a member of Ukmodsquad at the time I will not break privacy on the group per se. However anyone who writes something has the copyright on that. So with permission from the author I replay those comments here. The major part of the comment was on the concept that TFN thought that somehow it had talked to its members about the submission to the UK Climate Change Bull and reacted suitably based on feedback.

As for the submission, with all due respect for the wording of it, I have never seen so much nonsense put together in my life! I can’t even be bothered to go through it all and comment as all the points have already been mentioned and discussed here over and over again, without the “Directors” taking the slightest notice.
So now this precedent has been set, I am off to remove the NO POLITICS rules from my Etiquette file. Would any of the “Directors”care to comment on whether the rest of the rules are still valid, asI find it difficult to justify sticking to any at the moment, if Freecycle ignores its own rules blatantly!
I am seriously disillusioned and upset that the “Directors” have no respect either for the rules that Freecycle set, or for the loyal volunteer moderators that are trying to stick to the point of Freecycle. Therefore, I insist on an official apology from the “Directors” for sending this submission on behalf of Freecycle UK, without due consideration for all the sensible objections that were made.
But I suspect that I will not be heard, as weren’t those lot that have been giving their opinion and trying to sober up the “Directors”over the past few days.
Off to run my group. From now on, I am only loyal to my members. Freecycle, UK or not, has lost my faith and trust.

Prior to the above this moderator posted a reaction to the poll intended by TFN to ensure that everyone agreed with the submission.

“I appreciate the results not having been mentioned in the submission, as I strongly suspect that 99% of people who wanted to answer No to Question 1 just gave up when they read the rest of the poll, rather than answer nonsense, in order to submit their votes. The result is absolutely flawed”

I leave you to decide if this independent thinking moderator was right or wrong about how TFN operates in such matters.

I am going to leave this one for TFN to sort out

Freecycling in Gosport really needs to get a handle on this blogger.  The latest post has splattered a member’s personal telephone number all over the Internet.  I would write to Deron about this, but again he would argue that I was spamming him, whereas in fact if he does not get this sorted then he might find Yahoo’s legal department at least coming down on him like a ton of bricks.

I have blogged before about Gosport.  So let me say that if this kind of blatant abuse of private and personal information happens again I will be forced to take the matter to Yahoo myself.

Starting blocks…

The new website at TFN is coming on.  A key part of the strategy is to be able to update pages more easily and more effectively.  Unfortunately sometimes with new website developments useful old pages somehow get lost.  One that may be useful to moderators is Start A  New Group.  Where it is on the new website is beyond me.  But here is the link from the old, and it still works.

There, aren’t I nice.
