Fighting for freerecyling

Two wrongs do not make a right

TFN slags off Ema Wright publiclyI can see that Deron is just a tad upset about losing possibly half of his UK freecycle groups to the Freegle network, so far. But why must he libel a moderator of one of the North East groups on the UK freecycle homepage?

A third of all UK freecycle groups have joined Freegle

Whichever way you cut it more and more UK groups are leaving freecycle in their droves. This organisation that was only launched 4 days ago has grown by 50% in the last 24 hours. My last post reported 194 groups, whereas my latest search comes out at a staggering 347 groups.

Please tell me if I am wrong, but my crude maths says that between a third and a half of all UK freecycling groups have now converted over to Freegle.

IMPORTANT: If your group gets deleted

Brighton beach

Just now I tried to find Brighton (UK) freecycle group – and had difficulties.  The Cafe still exists with the freecycle epithet, but the group has either been renamed or deleted.  Also the link on the main TFN page does not work.  It occurs to me that in the near term many groups may be deleted.

This could mean that you, the owner decided to simply delete the group.  It could also be that, sadly you did not take heed and removed ErsatzFriend which was possibly used by TFN to delete your group.  It could also be that TFN complained to Yahoo about your group and that subsequently (this takes a few days) Yahoo then deleted it.

Anyway if your group gets deleted, and even if you are just a member and want it restored then ask Yahoo, officially.  “Deleted” groups are simply taken off-line and can be restored for up to 120 days.  If you have any problems making the approach then ask me or others for assistance.

Tomorrow 27% of freecycle disappears!

LONDON, ENGLAND - AUGUST 05: A man lights a c...

According to the Green Living Blog on the Guardian the UK Freecycling fraternity accounts for 27% of all freecycle activities – worldwide.  And as of tomorrow none of that will be associated with The Freecycle Network when nearly all UK groups will rebrand themselves away from the control freakery of Deron Beal.

IAFCmods set up new network

Freecycle at N2Y3

Following the breakdown in communications (was there ever any communication from Deron that wasn’t a form letter?) the IAFCmods group of moderators now seems intent on forming their own network.  In there own words (as already published on the web)…

“We the IAFCM Committee committee no longer see any way to negotiate with TFN or achieve our aims in the current Freecycle Network. Most of us are now moderated and believe we are targeted for removal from our TFN positions (and some are already removed). We are sorry we have failed to achieve our preferential aims..
We no longer feel we can ask you to stay in the Freecycle Network.
For this reason we will now focus the attentions of IAFCM Mods going alone, standing on our own two feet and launching a New UK led and democratically led successor Network. We have received many messages from member moderators urging us to prepare against this eventuality and have a successor Network ready to launch.
The proposed network will not follow the organisational model of The Freecycle Network. It will be led by a consensus, have free elections and polling of group members It will be looser than TFN and groups will be free to choose their own names for their groups, but may, if they wish, choose to use the the network name to increase their visibility in the search engines and have a higher profile as we promote it.
Thee may well be some groups that wish to stay in the Freecycle Network and if so we wish you well. We wish to be inclusive and we wouldn’t mind you having a dual affiliation but it we know it would result in you being kicked out of TFN so we wish you you well for the future
There will be a short delay before full instructions on how to establishing full links with the Network and cut the ties with TFN are published We are aware this is a big step and is not exactly what we had in mind when we first started with IAFCMODS and though many members are “raring to go” others may feel a bit pressured and need time and space to voice any reservations. We wish everyone to feel comfortable and we are aware that the committee were working under constraints where we could not consult on this as much as we wanted.
However such constraints are now lifted and there can be open discussion on on IAFCMods in which committee can fully participate.
Fuller instructions as to how to safely rename your group will follow. Please regularly read messages on IAFCMods group for information. We will also be posting admin notices you can use to communicate with your group members. Now it’s open to everyone can help modify and polish up admins etc. Please use this group as we used to use modquad in the past to develop best practise and to freely comment on proposals – but lets think outside the box as we don’t want to repeat TFN mistakes.
Post here if you are asked to stand down or your group is threatened in any way and we’ll support you in making the necessary changes.
Carol, Caroline,David, Edward, Mark, Saira and Seb
Your Interim Committee”

Behind the scenes things are happening

Palazzo Eni (Roma).

I did quip that while UkMods talks Rome burns.  That seems to be exactly what is happening.  TFN is battening down the hatches wherever it can.  Could it be that all this talk amongst UK Moderators will come to nothing?  Is the ground being taken from underneath them?  The fact that Stockton has in fact been closed, very much against Uk Moderators express wishes and very much ahead of any previously announced timeline shows to me that they are moving.

Along with that there are other events happening that I now know about but cannot report here.  Are we soon going to see a mushrooming of new MyFreecycle groups?  I predict a doubling over the summer months, and mostly in the UK.

Patience and understanding

No matter which way you cut it Deron Beal is treading all over the Uk Moderator Squad.  He is blatantly ignoring the express wishes of its membership and not even entertaining wanting Neil Morris back as director.  He has now demoted Neil from owner status on relevant groups.

Everything he says and does implies that he is moving on with new people, new pawns.  He continues to ignore any and all comments from Uk Mods asking for clarification on whether he will discuss the UK gripes.

To quote Deron, “Today, all TFN addys required as co-owner of national modsquads were demoted from co-owner status of this group. After contacting the owner address of this group, these privileges were reinstated.  I have now accepted Neil and Jacqui’s resignations and demoted them from their co-owner status of this group. We will be contacting the remaining group mods to see as to their wishes to remain as moderators of this group or not. This was a very unsettling situation. Thank you all for your patience and understanding.”

Patience and understanding, nice one Deron.

More resignations…

Is the UK freecycle network collapsing as we speak?  Apparently more resignations are happening…  I have to say, such events do not surprise me.  For so many years Deron Beal has held such tight control of The Freecycle Network, despite reiterating that he is forever going to devolve responsibility.  At the heart of this debate is the manifest complete lack of power-sharing of TFN itself, despite the fundamental requirements of charitable status, nevermind the “good thing” to do.

You will NOT use the word freecycle, really!

It is official, TFN do not want, nay will not allow anyone to use the word freecycle, whether it is capitalised or not. This is at least the case reported by The Guardian, UK.

I mean are TFN stupid or are they stupid? What happened was that a moderator member [ed correction, see comment] of the Slough freecycle group wanted to run an event that was around saving items from landfill – and they wanted to run it as a Freecycle event. So they asked for permission – and true to form TFN threatened them with the lawyers. I kid you not, “you have until midnight.”

Of course, that does not stop Deron Beal doing anything he wants. He certainly does NOT practice what he preaches. Deron Beal runs “Freecycle” events in Tucson with a big smile on his face. Of course he has the lawyers on his side, so that is why he is smiling. If you don’t believe this then check out this link. There are loads of others, and Deron is right there every time.

I am sorry, but how two faced can you get?

If you want it from the horses mouth check out the Tucson Weekly where Deron states explicitly that he is good for running “local” events. Of course, when he says local – he means local to Tucson. Now if we just lifted Slough out of Berkshire and dropped it next to Tucson, AZ everyone would be happy.
